Seattle TMJ Expert Dr. Timmerman Explains How to Perform a TMJ Self - Test
Here is a quick test and exam you can complete right now to determine if you show signs of a TMJ problem. Start by answering the following questions:
Do you get frequent headaches or facial pain?
Do you get frequent neck aches or shoulder aches?
Do you find yourself clenching your teeth during the day?
Do you grind your teeth at night?
Do you wake up with your teeth clenched?
The next step in your TMJ Self-Test is this simple physical exam.
Step 1) Put the pad of one finger (use the index finger) in each ear and with the pad facing forward toward your nose and press your fingers forward to apply light pressure.
Is it tender? Tenderness in this area can indicate inflammation in the temporomandibular joint.
Step 2) With your fingers still in your ears, open and close.
Do you feel or hear any popping or clicking? Popping or clicking can indicate problems with the cartilage that is in the joint space.
Step 3) Press a finger just slightly in front of the opening of your ears.
Do you feel tenderness? Tenderness in this area can indicate inflammation within the joint.
Step 4) With your index, middle and ring finger held together, open your mouth and see if you can place them vertically between your upper and lower front teeth? If you cannot, this is often a sign of TMJ problems.
If you answered, "yes" to any 2 or more of the above questions or experienced any of the indications in the physical exam, then you may have a TMJ problem. Please contact us to schedule a thorough consultation with Dr. Timmerman to determine the severity of your problem and your treatment options. Like many other medical conditions, the treatment of TMJ is much more effective when diagnosed in it’s earliest stages. Do not wait for your symptoms to become more severe before you decide to seek help.
